Dear Field Essays backers,

It's been already a few weeks since the 600 fabulous vinyls of Field Essays sit patiently in boxes. I listened to one, and it sounds as bewildering as we hoped...

However unfortunately, you will have to wait till September to receive it, along with the book, because we had some technical issues with the printer; they went bankrupt (and were bought up again, luckily), which proves again how much the world of art publishing is in need of support of readers & collectors like you!

Meanwhile, Brynjar won the Swiss Design Awards (Hurray Brynjar!), changed the name of his studio into Studio Brynjar & Veronika, and these days is experimenting with a temporary showroom in Reykjavik. Here's his page on Instagram: https://instagram.com/godirvinir/

Dear all!

Here is the third spring news bulletin of Field Essays.

At last the vinyls are in production, after a lot of work on the mastering (doing things simple is a lot of work), and even more (French) bureaucratic work!

The book awaits the final correction, the color correction, and the detailing for the lay-out and printing technique...

All this will be ready in a few weeks, which is great since summer projects have always been my favourites..

Wishing you a great evening and end of the week!

Dear all,

Many things happened in the course of the last month... Here's a selection of the steps we took, and we still need to take, to make the Vinyl Book happen. The process proves to be quite an adventure!

If you happen to be in Paris, don't hesitate to contact me or to pass by the Cité des Arts, it would be a pleasure to meet with you.

mid March: meeting with the printer (Lecturis in Eindhoven, NL) to decide on the fabrication of the cover and book binding. How to make a book that is the sum of VINYL + BOOK (and not a weak compromise in between)?

End of March: Rock and roll visits to vinyl manufacturers in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. We chose for Squeezer from Paris in the end, because of their personal service and quality.

Early april : signing price offers, getting authorization from SACEM to press Brynjar's stories, getting an official ISBN...

It all becomes really real now..

April - May : final dummy of the book, final text editing, then pressing, printing, transporting and assembling...

Dear all,

Here's the first of monthly updates regarding the production of the upcoming issue of Field Essays.

Now that Field Essays collected its printing budget THANKS TO ALL OF YOU, we will be finalizing the content, lay-out, and book design until April. We hope to send the book to print early May, so that we can assemble, pack and send the VINYL BOOKS at the beginning of June to Iceland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, England, Germany, the United States, and even Japan...

The VINYL is going to be mastered and pressed in a couple of weeks already, because production times for vinyls are quite long. We are now working on the stories, soundscapes and drawings that will shape it...

Lots of connections to still weave, beautifully illustrated by Brynjar in this video...

The Book Talk at Atelier Néerlandais last week was insightful: as guest anthropologist Stéphane Rennesson pointed out: "the world is interesting because we are interested in it". We create our environment by engaging with it, through "relational circles". As such, Brynjar's Bogbor Sveisson Bullfish documentary (2012) is "a very interesting anthropological object", because of the way it stages different forms of presence. Who / what gives life to whom / what in this awkward story of a hermit hunting a legendary animal?

The graphic design duo ÉricandMarie shared some of their editorial decisions in the process of translating Brynjar's process into the space of a book: "We try to work in his spirit, but without copying him. Hence the idea of introducing the cut – it's a way of taking things apart and rebuilding new connections."

The interview with Alastair Fuad-Luke, Professor of Emerging Design Practices, writer and activist, was great. We talked and talked about what design can, should, and cannot achieve, about "relational autonomy", and about how to know "what's actually there". In short: "We should be designing nows."
