Quotes of Life, an exhibition in support of the NGO Phare Ponleu Selpak
Quotes of Life is an exhibition presenting the journeys of 5 students enrolled in the art schools of the Phare Ponleu Selpak NGO in Battambang, Cambodia, through a series of photographs. Each subject taught at Phare (Dance, Circus, Music, Theatre, Painting) is represented by a student. A text accompanying the photos tells the student's story and ambitions, and everyone is invited to choose a quote that characterizes the student's philosophy and aspirations. Activities will be organized around the exhibition: opening, traditional dance performance (to be confirmed), experience feedback on international volunteering, discussion workshops on Cambodia... Phare Ponleu Selpak Phare Ponleu Selpak - meaning "the brightness of the arts" - is a non-profit Cambodian art school located in Battambang, the country's second-largest city and a major cultural and artistic center. The association has been helping children, young people and local communities through artistic, educational and social programs since 1994. Over 1,000 students benefit from these programs every year. Leisure programs in the performing, visual and applied arts, as well as vocational training, help children and young adults to develop their creativity, communication and concentration skills. The training offered by the school enables them to achieve a lasting artistic career, while preserving and promoting Cambodia's traditional arts and culture. Website: www.phareps.org Juliette Deloron Juliette DELORON is a young Frenchwoman doing a year-long Civic Service in Cambodia. She joined the NGO Phare Ponleu Selpak in September 2022 as a graphic designer, photographer and videographer for the communications department. She grew up in Strasbourg and studied audiovisual arts in Troyes and Saint-Brieuc. The idea for this project and exhibition grew out of her work with Phare. She wanted to find a way of using her skills to make the NGO better known in France, and thus help it raise funds. As Phare's students are at the heart of the association's project, she thought that presenting them would be a concrete way of illustrating the objectives and beneficiaries of its actions. Content of the exhibition The exhibition itself will be enhanced by a number of interactive activities. Photos The exhibition will feature photographs, texts and digital content in the form of QR codes. Four situations will be captured in images: a portrait an artistic performance a moment of preparation backstage a training session or a rehearsal. Texts will be written and translated into French, English and Khmer. They will tell the personal story of the young students and their ambitions, touching on subjects such as childhood, the birth of their vocation, their relationship with their discipline, the problems they may have encountered, and so on. A quote chosen by the student will enrich the portrait, as a philosophy of life or simply a strong or inspiring thought. QR codes will provide access to online content: videos or audio recordings of young people practicing their discipline for circus, dance, theater or music. Opening Visitors will be invited to an opening evening to meet the photographer, who will share her experiences in Cambodia, and in particular her work with Phare students. A buffet of Cambodian culinary specialities will also be served. We also hope to be able to present a traditional Khmer dance show. Initial contacts have been made with the Selepak Khmer association in Lognes (77). Exchanges Discussion sessions will be organized with students from the École Khmère de Paris, local schools and high schools, and anyone interested in learning more about international solidarity through volunteering. The photographer will lead these encounters by sharing her experience as a volunteer with the NGO Phare Ponleu Selpak, as well as her more general research carried out beforehand. This will be an opportunity for participants to ask any questions they may have, and to learn more about international solidarity.
