Koraï restores african coral reefs and raises awareness on their protection
African corals are in danger... According to a study conducted by Nature Sustainability, the 12,000 km2 of coral reefs along the African coasts bordered by the Indian Ocean are threatened with total disappearance by 2070. Koraï refuses to accept this fatality, and launches into the restoration, protection and evolution of coral reefs in Africa! What problems for African ecosystems in particular? Even though the African continent is not less spared by bad fishing or tourism practices, by water pollution and by the rise in temperatures, the countries of Africa present three factors of delay: Lack of restoration projects. Besides Kenya and South Africa, countries in Africa are lagging behind in restoration initiatives (with the exception of mangrove). Weak protection of marine areas. Objective at COP 15 biodiversity 2022: "30% of protected land and sea areas" by 2030 in Africa (vs 71% of protected mangrove areas in France). The relative sensitization of local populations. Far from access to information and education, many of the populations directly dependent on fishing are not aware of the extent of the problem or the possible solutions. ...but we can still react. By creating Koraï, we wish to act to protect the marine ecosystems of the African coasts on which millions of inhabitants directly depend. We have 4 main activities: rebuild: thanks to nurseries following a model of standardized operations, we reproduce then replant in the necessary areas corals, mangroves and seagrasses. protect: in partnership with managers of marine protected areas (MPAs) to identify restoration areas, scientific monitoring and the creation of new MPAs. assist: in partnership with teams of researchers, assist the evolution of corals in order to make them more resistant to warming waters. raise awareness: the nurseries will be open to visitors under the model of an edutainment aquarium and a natural history museum. Bring your stone to the building or your coral to the reef! We need your help to finalize the pilot nursery located in Nosy Be (Madagascar) which will be both a place of reproduction of corals but also an edutainment museum to raise awareness among local tourists.
€4,500 will allow the finalization of the pilot nursery in Nosy Be: finishing of the damaged pools, purchase of a marine pump to reactivate the third pool, purchase of the latest diving equipment. This allows our healers to multiply the cuttings! €3,500 will be used to create the edutainment part of the museum: creation of educational content in partnership with a team of scientists, construction of the ticket office, printing of the various displays for the museum, repair of signage and sanitary facilities. You thus allow the creation of the first aquarium in Madagascar aimed at raising awareness among local populations and national and local tourists alike. What if you helped us more? Creation of local jobs with an additional €5,000: by exceeding our target, you complete our budget for job creation and service provider contracts. Scenography and books with an extra €3,000: we aim to make the nursery a place of wonder and awareness, so that everyone can then act to protect our ecosystems. This is why we would like to add elements of scenography (screens with video) and free books for consultation.
