DÉJÀ - Festival d'Avignon OFF 2023
DÉJÀ is an original performance by the Krumple, inspired by the award-winning graphic novel “Here” by Richard McGuire. DÉJÀ takes place in a single location, 20 square meters of a living room, but on a massive timeframe: reaching deep into the past (80 006 032 BCE) and projecting into the future (7 billion CE). Multiple characters from different times coexist and interact in this space, and create an accumulation of cocktail parties, arguing couples, geiger counters, fires, floodings, arrivals and farewells. Through expressive movement, magical illusion and poetic imagery, the Krumple seeks to create a living time-capsule of the current moment, everything that has led up to it and project where humanity might be going. It questions our significance, or rather - our insignificance, faced with the passing of time. After a long pandemic break we are ready to bring the performance to one of the world’s biggest theatre festivals, Festival d’Avignon in France. Our aim is to reach new audiences, gain visibility and establish relations with new collaborators in both France and abroad. The performance will be shown every day at La Manufacture at the stage «Chateau» from July 7th through 24th (with the exception of July 12th and 19th). The festival is a big investment for the company and remains a substantial financial risk due to the many costs we need to cover. We’ve already applied and received funding from Arts Council Norway, The Danish Arts Foundation, Nordland Visual Theatre, STIKK (The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Embassy of Norway in Paris, DRAC Pays de la Loire (FR) and SPEDIDAM (FR) to cover expenses such as theatre space rental, housing for the team, travels for the entire company, artistic collaboration fees and set transportation from Norway to France. Even if a large part of the budget has been covered through funding and personal investment, we still need support to make this project happen. Who are we? the Krumple is an international theatre company who seek to create visually arresting theatre without borders. The human is at the forefront of everything we do, each show walking a fine line between sensitivity and stupidity, as we strive to look through both ends of the telescope for what usually cannot be seen. All shows are devised collaboratively, and without anyone taking themselves (too) seriously. We often seek to laugh and to make others laugh, and to tell stories in a nonlinear fashion, with a leaning towards the poetic and the surreal. Founded in 2013, the company is a collective of collaborating artists, performers, directors, magicians and musicians who met during theatre studies in Paris. The team who will bring DÉJÀ to Avignon is: On stage: Léna Rondé (FR), David Tholander (DK), Oda Kirkebø Nyfløtt (NO), Vincent Vernerie (FR), Jo Even Bjørke (NO) and Francois Lecomte (FR). Technicians: Agathe Patonnier (FR) and Cédric Colin (FR). You can aid us in two ways: 1. Spread the word about the performance. Let friends, family and colleagues know we’re performing in Avignon. 2. Support us through a donation and help us cover an important, remaining part of our budget. Your contribution will specifically help us cover expenses linked to our PR-agent and booking agent. These agents can become a make-or-break during the Avignon festival, as there are countless companies competing to be seen by audiences and professionals. Our PR-agent's task is to invite press and theatre critics to review and spread word about the show, which will bring in new audiences. Our booking agent's task is to invite theatres and other professionals to the show, who might book DÉJÀ for future performance dates and tours. Through your support we can greatly increase our chances of bringing in audiences and create relations with new theatres. But, what's in it for you - other than the profound exhilaration of supporting the arts? As a gesture of our gratitude we’ve made a set of rewards, which you can view and obtain in the support column on the right. On behalf of the whole company, thank you!
