Filtr' n°2
Presentation of the publishing house Filtreditions is an independent publishing house founded in 2017. Our activity revolves around the publication of printed objects as well as the creation of events and the launch of artistic editions for collective or individual projects. The genesis of the project? The creation of a collective magazine to give emerging artists new visibility through a unique editorial form. The original idea was to discover, through the book object, artistic creations (all practices and mediums combined) in the manner of an exhibition hall. Subsequently, we had orders from young independent artists wishing to develop an independent editorial project through our publishing house. Our catalog now consists of 3 editions by independent artists and 3 reviews from the Filtr’ collection. Filtreditions being an association according to the principles of the 1901 law, all the people involved directly or indirectly in the production and content of the editions are passionate and voluntary. The profits recovered on the sales of the editions are reinjected into the structure in order to participate in the financing of future journals. - Presentation of magazine The Filtr’ magazine is a collection of object-books that questions new exhibition spaces through the printed edition. Each issue brings together a group of authors and artists gathered around a common theme. Thus, it offers any artist or collective the opportunity to be visible through an edition distributed throughout France. Thought like an exhibition, each element of the edition is detachable and all the artistic projects can be used in two formats: that of the book and that of the display. The specificity of this object-book is to allow readers to choose their reading mode as well as the appropriate space for each room. Nothing is defined, the modes of reading are ephemeral and random, the journal lives with the actor of its readings. The Filtr’ magazine offers a free, malleable and unique reading. Its random design plays with the singular sensibilities of its collaborators: authors, creators, partners... Over the course of publications, this unique object metamorphoses, transforms and reveals itself. A unique, original and signed piece is also present in each copy of the entire collection of the magazine. At Filtreditions, we simply try to convey a little of this passion that drives us: the love of forms, mediums, possibilities, open books, half-open doors through which light passes. The various supports are associated with the points of view of the artists, the pictorial thoughts overlap in a joyful tumult of papers, volumes, grammages. Here, the folds, textures, imprints, transparencies and colors give spaces to touch, manipulate, feel. The reader becomes an actor. Opening this book, between the support and the art object, is to share a one-on-one with those who make and tell the history of art, it is to live a different aesthetic and sensory experience, neither entirely foreign nor entirely familiar. What is the place of the artist in the space of a book? What is the place of the book as a medium of creation? The questions are asked, you are free to write the answers. The review Filtr' is produced in France and published in 100 copies. All texts are translated into English and transcribed into Braille or audio via a QR code. It is distributed throughout France, in bookstores specializing in art publishing, fanzines, self-publishing, etc. To consult the previous reviews of our catalog, go to our website. - Presentation of the theme “Feel the invisible, touch the materials" The theme “Touching the invisible” revolves around reading gestures, prints that can be distinguished with bare hands, tactile reliefs, the perception of voids, solids, the contrast between the visible and the invisible. Imagine you can touch it with your eyes! In collaboration with professionals in the book chain, we wish, with this theme, to emphasize specific printing and shaping techniques, in order to transcribe as faithfully as possible, in the book, certain works in volume. Whether in volume, sound or palpable, we seek here to transmit and deepen a sensitivity to materials, textures, smells... Infinitely adaptable, paper has precious potential for telling stories. - Accessibility and innovative characters For this next Filtr’ review, we were looking to innovate and explore new horizons. This bias began with the choice of the theme “Touching the invisible” and was really revealed when we decided to make the magazine accessible to visually impaired people. For this, we went to meet associations, blind and visually impaired people, and approached many structures so that it could be distributed to associations, foundations, schools and bookstores specializing in visual impairment. The objective is also to use this object-book as a tool allowing the meeting between visually impaired and sighted people, and to create a dialogue around artistic publishing, a work for all. - Presentation of the artists - Azul Andrea, Paris Graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in Paris in 2015 Group exhibition at Ramakers Gallery, Den Haag, Netherlands, coming 2023 Personal exhibition at Le beau has an address in Brussels, coming 2023 Palms - Effleurer l'invisible is a drawing that the artist creates using his fingerprints. Enclosing them invites observation and a journey as close as possible to intimacy. Thanks to the realization of the embossing, the lines are revealed to the touch. Like a journey between shadow and light, Azul Andrea questions the notions of identity, trace and territory. This drawing has been specially edited in several copies using the engraving technique. - Delphine Gauly, Paris Teacher at the Duperré school in graphic design and screen printing workshop Extract from a tactile book intended to introduce braille, L'alphabet paysage illustrates an alphabet that teaches the alphabet to visually impaired people through a poetic story. Several techniques are used in this project: offset and screen printing, embossing, embossing and die-cutting. - Dorian Felgines, Limoges Member of the 748 collective A graduate of the Saint-Étienne School of Arts and Design, Dorian describes himself as a designer-tuner. He is interested in motor sports and more specifically in tuning: process of appropriating a standardized industrial object. Here, the Mechanical Flower project. Its movement spreads a perfume in the habitat and makes tangible the slightest movement of air. Simple snap-together assembly. The automotive filter rests on a piano wire weighted by a wooden base. She picks up the air currents and shows it to us by her agitation. The project is reinterpreted in a pop-up version. Formal simplification, but not physical, paper object to unfold. - Katharina Siegel, UK Grant obtained from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, 2022. Visual artist working mainly with the photographic medium. Around personal experiences with synesthesia, each color is associated with memories, an emotion or a person. The project presented for the magazine is an attempt to visualize the invisible, thanks to two photographs transcribed by the technique of collage using different colored papers associated with memories. Each shape and shade of paper is also identifiable by touch. - Marie Bresson, Paris Member of the Allier workshop and exhibited at the sacred art festival, 2021 This artist works in art therapy on female questions and relationships with her own body. His project is composed of abstract minimalist illustrations, named O Eternity. Each subtly leads to questioning the dimension of water and the sacred feminine in each of us, men and women. All vibrations inform the water, whether these frequencies are near or far, whether they come from the Earth or from the Universe. A breath mingles with the fluidity of the line, the void perceived by the eye is actually filled with information, just like the density of the seabed and the immensity of the starry sky. Realization for the magazine of two illustrations, drawn from his series and printed in selective varnish. Drawings that we bring to different axes of creative thoughts. - Marie Le Moigne, Brittany Teacher in Design and Crafts in Quimper Marie Le Moigne studied typography - publishing and contemporary photography at the ERG in Brussels. Her artistic practice revolves around the dialogues that the visual arts and literature can establish. In addition, she engages and questions herself, through publications in various art and design magazines, in a reflection on societal issues revolving around feminism, the body, memory, etc. Visual creation is an extension of this reflection on dialogue where photography and text intertwine. The typographic elements were created and printed by hand by the artist, asperities or accidents may appear. The words are revealed to the touch by the brushing of the characters inked in slight relief. Added to the visuals is a translation of “touching the invisible” in Braille. Each copy is unique. - Naila Akli, Brussels Member of the Graphoui workshop and the 3.17 workshop Selected from his engraving collection, the hands recall human respect and accessibility to disabilities. She uses the transfer of her image to make her embossings by hand, each piece is unique and made by the artist. - Patrick Rimond, Paris Co-founder of the Galerie L'Escalier in Auxerre Co-director of the Tangible Image Biennial, Paris In search of a structure underlying reality, Patrick Rimond cuts out and recomposes his prints of photographs of the city of Osaka in Japan. These collages are then digitally "filtered" to reveal only lines invisible to the naked eye. For the magazine, three linear urban landscapes have been created and offer infinite overlays. - Issues, targets and beneficiaries Our magazine has been developed for an audience of art collectors, lovers of artists' books and specialized art bookshops. With this new publication, we want to develop its accessibility to the visually impaired, by offering a book designed by touch. Filtr N°2 will be 90% accessible to visually impaired people. We would like it to be distributed in associations, foundations, schools and bookstores sensitive to visual impairments. However, we have produced the magazine in the same way as previous editions and we want it to remain an artist's book. We will continue to promote dissemination and distribution in art bookstores as well as to our partners specializing in object books. Designed to become a book accessible to various sensitivities, an open sharing tool accessible to all. A workshop was carried out in July 2022, in partnership with Atomota, an association which supports the integration of culture into people with disabilities. This workshop made it possible to present the prototype of the magazine to a panel of visually impaired and blind people who were able to give their first impressions of reading each project. He made it evolve and made us rethink the production of certain works. Indeed, he revealed to us certain constraints related to the feelings, emotions and imaginations of blind people, which are almost impossible to detect as sighted people. We will carry out a second workshop with visually impaired people only, by 2023, to collect second opinions on the final object of the review. The texts present in the magazine will be transcribed in Braille or in audio via a QR code. We are open to the creation of workshops or partnerships during the distribution of this magazine. - Creator of the project and people active on the project Marie Lorieux is the founder of the Filtreditions publishing house. A graphic designer by training, she developed her self-employed activity as a model maker and artistic director in print publishing. She created the Filtr’ magazine project as soon as the structure was launched, 5 years ago. First supported by Samuel Arnaud, a French photographer, for 3 years, she then continued to develop the publishing house on her own with a few contributors and volunteers. - People active on the project Marie Lorieux - Project Manager Carole Torres - Head of Partnerships and Grants Thomas Bachelot - Accounting Julie Penellon - Management of associative relations Juliette Dupuis - Video production Clémentine Santerre - Editorial office - Filtereditions Publishing house E.filtreditions@gmail.com W.filtreditions.com IG. @filtereditions F. facebook.com/filtreditions
Allocation of funds
Filtreditions is an associative structure led by voluntary actors; the editions are financed by our sales and by subsidies. Filtr N°2 is an independent journal with a self-produced part, which implies a time-consuming creation process and significant budgets for the structure. Distribution and dissemination are also carried out internally and on a voluntary basis. In order to maintain editorial independence, we have chosen to offer you our magazine for pre-order on KissKissBankBank. The collection will cover up to 60% of the production budget, allowing us to produce the best book object with the support of our readers. We offer the pre-order of the new journal but also counterparties with the old journals or independent editions of the publishing house. A digital pre-order, exceptional for this edition, is available to facilitate accessibility for visually impaired people. A symbolic counterpart is set up for small budgets, do not hesitate! It can be the financing solution. An independent magazine is nothing without its precious readers, so we're counting on you to pre-order your issue of Filtr' and contribute to the sustainability of our beautiful project. - The budget Papers, prints and shaping: €10,000 - Additional costs not taken into account in the kitty: Texts and translations: €350 Communications: €300 Distribution: 1500 €
