The Dictator’s Trial is a historical, social, and educational theatre play. Synopsis: At the end of his life, Paraguayan lawyer and Human Rights activist Martín Almada nurtures the dream to bring to justice his people’s dictator, blood thirsty General Alfredo Stroessner, for a trial the latter managed to avoid during his lifetime. Having made his way to Dante’s Inferno, his quest looks successful until the Beast tricks him into defending the General… in order for the trial to take place! Illustration by © Romain Caudron
Allocation of funds
Dear friends, welcome to everyone! I am investigative journalist and writer Pablo Daniel Magee. After eight years spent investigating Doctor Martín Almada (who discovered the Archives of Terror) and the Condor Operation in Latin America between 2013 and 2020, I wrote the book Opération Condor, published in Paris by the Éditions Saint Simon in 2020. Following the publication of the book, which since then became a reference work on that subject, I wrote the theatre play The Dictator’s Trial, produced last year with the help of Asunción’s Alliance Française as a podcast. You can listen to the Spanish version of the play on www.pundonoroso.com The play met a great success in Latin America, and the grand master of theatre in Paraguay qualified The Dictator’s Trial as being ‘a central piece in the south American cultural pantheon´. Today, after the Covid 19 pandemic, we wish to bring the play up to the stage. To do that, we received cultural funds from Paraguay, but they are just not enough to make the magic happen. This is why we need you! We need at least 2.900€ to get the project started. As this is a historical memory play, offering the Paraguayan people to whitness the trial of their dictator (one that never took place), we wish to produce it in schools, high schools, and universities. Many thanks for taking the time to read this, and hoping you’ll feel like helping us in this endeavour, Best wishes, Pablo Daniel Magee
