SYNOPSIS

Oscar and his best friend Charlie spend most of their time leaning on the bar and relaxing in the sun. Their daily lives were disrupted by the emergence of a new political regime, the Brown State. The two men conform to its new laws in order to maintain their routine firmly rooted in their neighborhood. But the measures are accumulating and threaten to alter their lives forever.

A MEETING

At the origin of this project my meeting with the French-Bulgarian writer Franck Pavloff. four years ago. Discovery of his novel « Brown Morning », touched me deeply and have remained engraved in my memory ever since.

THE NOVEL

This short text has established itself as a real force for disobedience for its readers. In a few pages, Franck Pavloff presents a powerful and beautiful satire on the sneaky rise of extreme political regimes and asked the question "Do we know where the small cowardice of each of us collectively risk leading us?" The novel was first published in 1998 and became popular in France in 2002 when populist National Front movement reached the second round of the presidential elections.

THE BIRTH OF THE PROJECT

Adapting Franck Pavloff's short story as part of my final year project became obvious to me. More I worked on the film, more I saw the need to tell this story today and to approach this short film as a resonance to the news - the rise of extremes, be it in thoughts, words, decisions and actions...

THE CHALLENGE OF ADAPTATION

The challenge of the film is to adapt and transmit the power of the short story in a movie to maintain this effectiveness without falling into a moralizing drama. The film draws on the power of poetry and draws its inspiration from the works of directors such as Emir Kusturica, Federico Fellini and Roberto Begnini.

“Matin Brun” is combining politics and poetics. The characters in this film are all deeply divided between ignoring to protect their “little” daily comfort and their desire to act in the face of change.
