Intégrale Zap Comix Volume 2
The underground culture monument is back ! After a first volume published in 2020 and thanks to you, Editions Stara invite you to support the Volume 2 of Zap Comix. Immerse yourself once again in the creative and subversive comics led by Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton and the whole team of underground comics artists. Reserve your hardcover copy, limited to 200 copies, accompanied by a numbered ex-libris signed by Gilbert Shelton himself. You can also reserve Zap Comix Vol 2 in a paperback edition, and get your hands on the very last copies of Zap Comix Volume 1, now completely sold out in bookstores. Zap Comix Vol 2 will not be released in bookstores until next September. Contributors will receive it at the end of June / beginning of July 2022. We need you to make this second and last volume in French possible ! In 1968, an unknown young artist named Robert Crumb self-edited the first issue of Zap Comix, which he himself sold with his wife in a baby carriage on the sidewalks of San Francisco. From the following issues, he was joined by S. Clay Wilson, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, Robert Williams, Spain Rodriguez, Gilbert Shelton ... History was on the move. The Underground movement took off and Zap Comix was going to serve as its model. All the author's comics, until today, find its point of origin in Zap, its incredible freedom of tone, its complete disregard of conventions, and the demonstration that the comic is such a fertile mode of expression as literature or as art. In the middle of the Summer of Love, a broke young cartoonist imagines a magazine that would allow him to express himself and create freely, without constraints and without censorship. He edited the first issue himself, which he auctioned off with his wife on the sidewalks of San Francisco. The underground movement took off and Zap Comix served as its model for almost 50 years, the latest issue, Zap n°16, being published in February 2016. Inexplicably, Zap Comix had never been translated into French until Editions Stara, which specializes in underground comics, took on the project. In July 2020, we released the first volume of the complete collection, bringing together issues 0 to 9, thanks to your enthusiastic support on KissKissBankbank. The expectation was there and confirmed when Zap Comix Vol 1 was released in bookstores, it sold out in just a few weeks. Now it’s time to support the second and last part of this complete collection, bringing together issues 10 to 15 of Zap, originally published between 1982 and 2004, as well as the special issues Zap 7/7c (1972) and Zap Zam (1974). Since the beginnings of Zap, each of the artists on the team has evolved, and continues to bring part of their universe to Zap. It is also a period of internal debates : Robert Crumb wishes to open the magazine to new artists, while Victor Moscoso prefers to maintain the original team, to maintain control and a certain coherence of the magazine. These disagreements become creative raw material, and the pages of the magazine are enriched by the positions of each other in all sincerity, including when Crumb announces that he is leaving Zap at the time of issue 14, to finally return to it in the next issue. Photo © Catherine McGann This volume 2 contains 400 pages fully restored, translated and re-lettered into French, a gallery of the color covers of issues 10 to 15, as well as Zap 7/7c and Zap Zam, as well as an "oral history of Zap" compiled by comics historian Patrick Rosenkranz based on interviews with the team members. The cover of this Zap Comix Vol 2 is based on the special issue Zap Zam (1974). Exclusively for this new campaign, we offer you a limited edition of 200 copies with a hard cardboard cover, accompanied by a numbered ex-libris signed by Gilbert Shelton. You will also be able to find the very last hardcover copies of Zap Comix Vol 1. To complete your collection, the latest issue, Zap Comix n°16, which we released in 2016 simultaneously with its release in the United States, is also available to you. You will also find a selection of Editions Stara titles in the pledge offer : Binky Brown rencontre la Vierge Marie by Justin Green (who sadly has just passed away on April 23rd) Jésus la terreur des zombies by Stephen Lindsay Nounours en enfer by Rory Hayes Zap Comix Vol 2 will be delivered at the end of June / beginning of July 2022 to contributors, and will be released in bookstores in September 2022.
