Yuck! is an animated short directed in 2023 by Loïc Espuche and produced by two independent companies, Ikki films and Iliade et films. After a festival run in over 34 countries, more than 120 selections and nearly 30 awards, this childlike romantic comedy has the chance to compete for the 2025 Oscars®. Help the French kisses fly to L.A. by wearing the film's goodies! WATCH THE FULL MOVIE ON FRANCE TÉLÉVISIONS (only available in France) 👉 HERE 👈 👄 Kisses and disgust 🤢 Yuck! tells the story of little Léo who, torn between disgust and fascination, will thwart shame to make his very first kiss on the mouth. It's a sunny and pop rom-com about the birth of feelings, fear of other people's gaze and the notion of "secret garden". A film made with the 💖 Yuck! is a film about first times. First kiss for Léo, first commission for composer Aliénor Doublet, first colorscript for Elie Martens, it's also Loïc Espuche's first personal short film and the first time Juliette Marquet (Ikki films) and Manon Messiant (Iliade et films) produced an animated film together.
Loïc Espuche was born in Villeurbanne. A director and storyboarder who has studied at the BTS communication visuelle de La Martinière, EMCA and École de la Poudrière, he directed seasons 2 and 3 of La Petite mort (adapted from Davy Mourier's comics). For the En sortant de l'école series, he directed the short film “Mutation”, which featured a kiss scene. During the screening, all the children started shouting “yuck!”, which gave him the idea for the film. Loïc, Juliette and Manon met in 2017 while working together on the production of an animated feature film produced by Sacrebleu Productions. Juliette has since joined Ikki Films, an independent company founded in 2011 and based in Tours. Ikki Films produces singular films with a bold vision of the world, with an international outlook, such as Negative Space (nominated for an Oscar® in 2018), and Granny's sexual life (César for animated short film in 2023). Juliette joined Ikki Films as a production manager for animated projects, and went on to work on series for Darjeeling and Dandelooo. A recent graduate of the series program at La Fémis, she now devotes most of her time to writing. Manon has a degree in political science. After working on film sets, she decided to devote herself to production, joining Kazak Productions, then Sacrebleu Productions. In 2018, she joined forces with Oury Milshtein to set up the Paris-based company Iliade et films, where she develops and produces films by emerging auteurs in both animation (Vergine Keaton, Florent Grattery, Vaiana Gauthier) and live action (Félix de Givry, Valentin Noujaïm, Laura Thomassaint). Since the idea poped in Loïc's head in 2018, we've spent 5 years developing, financing and making the film. Over the years, we've built up a team that's very much like us: young people trying things out - sometimes for the first time! Yuck! it's : 👄 60 people working on the film; 👄 more than 9,300 drawings; 👄 more than 20,000 hours of work; 👄 63 script versions; 👄 13 animatic versions; 👄 4 production sites across France: Lyon, Vendôme, Valence and Paris. From Villeurbanne to L.A.? 🎞 ➡️ 🇺🇸 Since its international premiere at the Berlinale in February 2024, we've been lucky enough to show Yuck! on every continent and in over 34 countries! Today, the film has the opportunity to race for the Oscars® 🌟 An Oscar race is a marathon lasting several months to promote the film to Academy members, the media and the public. It takes place in 3 phases: 🎥 The first vote takes place in December: it determines a shortlist of 15 films. 🎥 In January, Academy members select the 5 nominated films. 🎥 Finally, the ceremony takes place on March 2, 2025. It's a fun, exciting challenge that takes time and energy. Above all, it's a major financial investment - several tens of thousands of euros. Because you have to : 💖 Surround yourself with communications professionals to implement the strategy and operational aspects (organizing screenings, targeted invitations to Academy members, promoting the film abroad and in major studios, buying advertising space in specialized media...). 💖 Decline and put online our marketing for US audience. 💖 Create official goodies. 💖 Travel to the US to present the film, if it reaches the final stage. We're cutting costs and investing in risk, but independent companies like Ikki and Iliade operate on a financial model that doesn't allow us to spend large sums on film promotion. The €7,500 we're aiming for is the minimum needed to campaign without jeopardizing the companies and their future projects. If we exceeded this amount, it would be incredible! It would give us the means to roll out a larger campaign, and multiply Yuck!'s chances of being shortlisted, and why not nominated! We believe in it. Do you? Then you can help us! PUT SOME GLITTER IN YOUR LIFE ✨ Goodies are available according to your desires and means. We've chosen to offer you items that are as eco-responsible as possible: t-shirts, sweatshirts and caps are embroidered in France in Villeurbanne (Loïc's hometown 🫰). T-shirts (180g) and sweatshirts (300g) are made from organic cotton, and manufactured to the highest standards of respect for workers. Posters are printed near our Paris premises and postcards are printed in France. And don't forget: embroidery can feature either "Beurk!" or the international title "Yuck!"!
