The design of the keyboard and its industrialization have already been completed, the keyboard is already functional. There is minimal risk to your involvement in this pre-sale campaign. Technical specifications The Cairn Mesa | Key design 1. Top sheet: an aluminum sheet (a metal that can be recycled almost infinitely), brushed and anodized with a soft texture, pleasant to touch 2. M3 screws: the screws have a slotted head ISO 2009 in stainless steel. This prevents restriction to repairs from needing special tools. The screws are very visible to facilitate their accessibility. 3. Circuit board: The card connects to any other computer, and to the futur modular laptop of Cairn Devices. Its LED matrix offers a luxurious lighting in the colors of Cairn Devices. 4. Plastic casing: the casing, made of PLA (Bio-sourced and bio-degradable), is a structural part of the keyboard. Its role is to secure the PCB and keep it in place 5. Stainless steel plate: the stainless steel plate is fitted with magnets to secure it inside the modular laptop. Its openwork design allows to lighten the whole 6. Brackets: these are the removable keyboard supports. They are designed in the shape of pebbles, in reference to the company's name A keyboard made in France Local production allows a lesser ecological impact, compared to manufacturing in Asian countries, which are further away and have less stringent regulations. Fn Lock key You've probably already had to contort your hand to access some of the special keys, as traditionally you must hold down the "Fn" key. We have therefore decided to modify the operation of this key, by modelling it on the principle of the "Caps Lock" key. Pressing the Fn Lock key allows you to access the various secondary functions on the line of function keys. We use the new CHERRY MX Ultra Low Profile switches! The Cairn Mesa | Key is one of the first keyboards to incorporate this technology, which offers many advantages: Durability: CHERRY's unique technology, combined with durable mechanics, ensures superior durability with consistent writing quality Switching characteristics: the MX Ultra Low Profile switch has a tactile switching characteristic and acoustic feedback. The ortholinear Cairn Mesa | Key Following many requests from the community received since the beginning of the campaign, we will propose an orthogonal model for those who wish it. The Cairn Mesa | Key in orthogonal version is the same level of service and quality as a Cairn Mesa | Key in ISO version, but freed from the legacy of the typewriter! But be reassured, all the background work is already done. In terms of engineering, this represents little work, because we had already worked on this hypothesis, but we were not sure that there would be a demand. Programmable keys, NKRO & Macro You can program up to 9 keys (P1 to P9) on the Cairn Mesa | Key. This programming is done through the QMK Configurator which we will set up once the campaign is over. We will provide a link to this utility with the contributors. With the N-Key Rollover, you can press an unlimited number of keys simultaneously and everything will be taken into account! The keyboard also allows you to create Macro keys. It will be possible to record directly from the keyboard the combination you wish to associate with a particular key. Macros are reset when the keyboard is turned off. Ergonomic numberpad For an optimal use in a professional environment, we have chosen to integrate a numberpad. Have you ever made a mistake in a mathematical operation while typing your calculation on the numberpad? With the Cairn Mesa | Key, you won't have to worry about that anymore: the "+", "-" and "enter" keys are the same size, making life easier for you. Comfort is in these small details. Compatible with the Cairn Mesa: the modular laptop This crowdfunding is also an opportunity for you to support our modular laptop project. But what is a modular laptop? Our goal is to create a laptop that can be easily repaired and upgraded, thanks to a system of Blocks and Mods. It is based on 3 levels of modularity: Level 1: removable functional parts (RAM, SSD, ...) named Blocks Level 2: modules called Mods, allowing for example to replace a webcam, USB ports, ... Level 3: replaceable interfaces (keyboard, touchpad, ...) and detachable touch screen Indeed, today, laptops are neither repairable nor upgradeable. This poses an ecological and economic problem for the user. We refute this standard of a sealed computer, which is why we are developing a modular laptop, the Cairn Mesa. Thanks to its USB connection, the Cairn Mesa | Key is compatible with all computers. But, it is especially compatible with our modular computer the Cairn Mesa, being one of its... modules! You will be able to install it and remove it with a simple motion. Of course, it will be possible to acquire the modular laptop without the keyboard, if you have already bought the keyboard. An Open Hardware keyboard The Cairn Mesa | Key is completely Open Hardware (under CERN-OHL-S license), so it will be delivered with all blueprints and diagrams. What does this mean?
