Drinking water for Tankarpata Community !

Tankarpata community is just 20 minutes far from the tourist center of Cusco, so close but so far ... The community is not connected to the network of public transport, it has no system of garbage collection and has no access to drinking water. This fact directly affects the health of families and is reflected in the academic development of children.

Consumption of non drinking water causes diseases ranging from intestinal disorders to infections of the skin and affects both children, adults and seniors. As for children, the lack of drinking water is primarily characterized by a slow development. In addition, medical intervention for these children has no longer any effect because the parasites have already become resistant to drugs they received before stages.

Several requests were made to the authorities to find a solution to this problem, however, the response remains inadequate. Yet, the NGO CooperarPeru assumed coordination with the municipality of San Sebastian for the implementation of a water supply project for the Tankarpata community, but the process is too slow to relieve the urgent needs of the population. It is in this context that the NGO CooperarPeru has set the goal of establishing direct links with the public to identify the main problems related to the use of drinking water, while performing solution research activities with various local actors.

The water system of Tankarpata is nearly 22 years old and becomes obsolete. To act quickly, the community wants to rehabilitate the tank that supplies the community with water. For this, the tank must be renovated inside and outside. In addition, in order to purify water and to avoid its pollution before reaching the homes of Tankarpata the community wishes to establish a purification system using chlorine.

This method has been used for several decades. In large networks of drinking water, chlorine is added to water so that the water is not contaminated during transport from the treatment plant to the user. In addition, chlorination is used in family or community level in many developing countries where water availability is likely to be contaminated. It is also established by the international solidarity organizations in emergency situations.

For security reasons the chlorine tank will be raised to 2.6 metres above the ground and

the whole plant will be surrounded by a fence.

The plans for the setting-up and the equipment list have been provided to us by engineers of the City of San Sebastian.

The estimated budget of the drinking water project for Tankarpata is up to 22,678.07 Nuevo Sol or exactly 5940.39 euros! We have already gathered about € 2,440 thanks to various donations.

In addition, by raising awareness, we managed to reduce the budget of 500 € by involving the population on the site. In fact, this population will do the work reserved for unskilled labour work.

Here's what the budget published by the engineers of the city of San Sebastian consists of :

Skiller labour force : 3937 nuevo sol or 1031 euros.

Unskilled labour : 1908 nuevo sol or 500 euros.

Material : 6199 nuevo sol or 4244 euros.

Equipment / tools : 634 nuevo sol or 166 euros.

If, thanks to you, we exceed our target, the money will be used to buy paint to paint the tank with children in an educational and teaching purpose.
