A few days ago we organized the last official photoshoot for the Lady Marmelade project. The end of the shootings paid by this very crowdfunding. Now we can finish the illustrations and as soon as the text is done, the first tome will be published with Librinova publishing and shopped to other publishers. After that we will look for a place to organize our exhibition, the very last step of the project.

All in all, this is very good news for our Kissbankers. The outfits bought during the crowdfunding are now available to those who bought them. And now that we are going to finish the illustrations for the book, we'll be able to produce the goodies and other memorabilia rewards (postcards etc). Just give us the time to get the money, so they'll be ready around the end of summer to be sent out to you.

It was a little bit difficult to write this newsletter because even though this isn't the end of this adventure, it closes a big chapter. Now, if you're a big reader like I am, you probably get this thing when ending something is frightful. It goes along with the excitement of turning pages. It's the fear of moving on from things and people, to dive into the unknown next. But nonetheless, I am very happy because it was more than time for me to focus on the book only.

as we announced to you, we're going to try and keep this one newsletter every two weeks schedule.

So what's new ? Well our third photoshoot was planned on April 9th, at Ophelie's place. I arrived earlier than the others so that I'd be already in my first attire of the day when the rest of the crew was finally here.

When Sophie got there, we were able to shoot almost immediatly and to keep this great timing for the whole day and shoot 4 outfits !. From Middle East to India to China, talk about some serious jetlag. When one is used to our usual pace this was an amazing day and we were quite proud of ourselves.

We just have one last shooting planned in order to finish the illustrations financed by this crowdfunding. Ophelia Lecomte worked as Ophelie's assistant for the day and as usual we need to thank Éloïc and Kotetsu for having us over. Thanks to the people who followed us live on Twitter and Periscope, we'll broadcast again during our next shooting on May's 1st !

In other news, I visited our agent Librinova to ask them some last minute questions before they published the first tome of Lady Marmelade's adventures. Their cute Parisian office is perfectly fit for this very warm and very client focused team. It's a little cosy place nested near the bank of La rive gauche (the litterary heart of Paris) next to l'Île de la Cité (where you can find Notre-Dame). Anyway, I loved it there, and if it weren't a working day for them all I would have stayed for hours to read the authors from their own library, sipping my tea on a comfy couch. This "we are proud of our authors" touch is malking me feel all cuddly inside. The last time I was published in a serious house, I was under the impression that I was just a number among others. At Librinova's, each quill is unique. I love them so much that I did bake them some corporate cupcakes.

We started shooting again (let us remind you that without those photos, Chimère can't finish his paintings, without his paintings, the book lacks its illustrations, without a complete project we cannot pitch publishers, there can't be goodies for our kissbankers nor an exhibition ). The shooting was very physical but we keep holding on. A third shooting is planned for next Saturday, please wish us luck on this one.

Often, when one writes a book, one is alone facing paper. Sometimes, when one creates such a project as Lady Marmelade, one can feel a little disheartened or powerless. Last Saturday, we held the overdue kissbankers tea party for those who chose this compensation. I can easily speak for Chimère and Sophie by saying that on this day, we were anything but alone. We truly felt each of you cheering us up through the present kissbankers. We felt rich and strong with your support. We weren't 10 at the table, but 209 ! And for someone used to scribble alone, there is no greater thing than being able to share a story with people who appreciate it. Just writing about it or sorting the pictures from Saturday makes me emotional and thankful.

We held the tea party at Rose Thé in Bastille. The tea parlor was extremely patient with my all vegan menu request. It was a first for the House and quite a success for my taste buds. Corinne (who owns Rose Thé) is quite the amazing cook so it was a pretty safe bet from the start. I wanted a cosy place to hold the event, as cosy as inviting people over to my home for tea. We were lucky, not only was it very sunny that day, but also the tea parlor wasn't jammed with people.

In between a piece of lemon fondant or chocolate cake, we showed 2 big prints of Chimère illustrations. He had come from Lille just for the day. We also presented 2 costumes of the project created by Clara Maeda and bought by crowdfunders. I was wearing a third costume, the one that would be the lightest to wear on a summer day. When it was time to leave, everyone got a gift bag with a spices mix and a jar of fresh homemade Charlotte's curd.

After this big landmark, the Lady Marmelade team needs to thank each of you again to help us bring this adventure to life. Thanks to Rose Thé. Thanks to Sarah, Laetitia, Pudding, Laurent, Emmanuel, Pierre, Lucie & Mickaël to have spent the day with us.

On a personal level, I also would like to thank my team who accepted this crazy challenge before we even knew it could become reality. Thx Chimère for creating such an unbelievable universe to write about. Thank you Sophie for your eyes coming from another century who can show things the way people aren't able to see them anymore. Thx to Leucosie and Clara, our brush and needle extraordinaires. We missed you on that day, but we thought fondly about you.

Art projects are like wild animals in winter. Their rhythm slows down, while they feed on whatever it is that they harvested during the year. Lady Marmelade, is no different and hibernation time is over with fresh and positive news !

Clara brought us the last costumes of the set. Opening the bag was even more moving than the previous times as this ends a big chapter in our project. The next newsletters will present them to you chapter by chapter.

For the moment, the costume photoshoot is still delayed as one of our team members still has health issues. We are taking 2 months to think about what can be done. 2 months during which Chimère is working on our awesome website and 2 months while we are going to wait for answers from literary agents we started pitching. We will get into more details later.

Meanwhile, the kissbankers who chose a kit featuring several souvenirs from Lady Marmelade's trips just received a box containing not only the curry spices shown to you previously but also spices to make their own flavored rum. Those spices are coming from La Réunion island that I got to visit recently. My room smells amazing now !

Also going to the post office this week, a new batch of Lady Marmelade curd for the rare people who received their jar broken. We took extra care this time of the parcels to make sure you would get it in one piece.

As always, the incentives are shipped a few ones at a time. It is an unscheduled budget (we'll know for next time) and we can only afford so much each month.

Next on the list is the Tea Party, the date is set, the tea parlor reserved, the menu ordered, I can't wait to be there !

After the huge newsletter that we published about Great-Britain (btw thanks for all your nice feedback , next time don't hesitate to post them here <3), we're making it a little shorter and a little more efficient with the Paris chapter. First a little intro with Leucosie's moodboard :

The matching bloomer is just adorable ! And God, this faux-cul !!

So, what do you think ?

I don't want to spoil anything and every time I announce something for a precise dateline I just can't keep my word. Nevertheless all my gonna say is that I can't wait for the holidays. (wink wink)

Lucie Béluga and the Lady Marmelade.

FOOD. With writing and the sky, as far as I can remember, it has always been an obsession, a pleasure, a passion. I was always first at the table, always last to clear up my plate. It is no coincidence, if my first cookbook has already been published, while my novels, short stories etc are still gathering dust inside my drawers. No accidental happening either when Chimère asked me to write about his Lady Marmelade. With such a name, transforming her travels into a scrumptious Odysseus was not only logical, but also quite obvious. This probably explains better why so many pledges dealt with food. Even though we take our time to get back to our kissbankers, I wanted to tell you about a few of those special retributions.

1) The cooking lesson

Clara Maeda's mom happily surprised me by getting this compensation. Therefore last winter, I traveled by train to Normandy with my spices satchel to give the very first cooking lesson of my life ! Initially planned for one person this lesson was to be taught in front of 5 multilingual very good cooks. Despite the challenge, I had an amazing time. We cooked a curry and some samossas in a warm and joyful atmosphere until late in the afternoon. Probably busy with the memory of this great afternoon, none of us remember where the pictures of this day eneded up hahaha.

2) The picnic

This summer, the awesome Élodie met me in the Vincennes woods (next to Paris) for a picnic that I am still proud of to this day. In the menu were, a grilled graffiti eggplant tower with 2 pestos and a cashew cheese, mini fennel, onion and Vegusto cheese pizzas, salads, gazpachos and smoothies. All homemade, all vegan, as Élodie is also a non omnivore like me. I think she enjoyed my selection.

3) The Take-out dinner

Au couple of days ago, Steven and I finally set a day for his compensation (I had been stalking and annoying him for months hahaha). I added a few surprises to my delivery and I am particularly happy because even though my "Chicken Masala" happened to be vegan, Steven told me they ate it all (and there was a lot to eat ^^) and liked it.

In a nutshell, even though things are going more slowly than in other crowdfunding projects, we are getting even, one kissbanker at a time. It is something very dear to my heart, as much as driving the Marmelade project to its final production.

See you next week for other cool news !

This time, no frills or fuss, we packing heat in this newsletter and show you ALL the phases of one step of the story. It is a bit tedious, but it will demonstrate how intertwined everyone's work is with each other's.

Phase 1 :

in Lille (north of France), Chimère unveils his vision pour for chapter and the location with a first quite developed digital draft without the characters or using mock-up engravings. Smells like Jane Austen, doesn't it ?

Phase 2 :

In Paris, I draft the chapter guidelines, the main adventures, the themes, etc. Sorry English readers <3 translation will only come once the book is done.

Phase 3 :

In Japan, once she's visualized Chimère's work and seen my ideas, Clara draws a sketch and finds fabric that will fit to the chapter's atmosphere.

Phase 4 :

In Ile-de-France, after she's taken notice of the color direction and the future costume style, Leucosie creates a corresponding moodboard for make-up and hairstyle inspiration. She then draws many (like many many) sketchs and one final watercolor painting.

Phase 5 :

Clara then hand makes the outfit and sends it to France.

Phase 6 :

(those are a bit blurry because they are screen captures from our future making-of) We all gather in a Normandy studio to shoot the costumes. I am really lucky to get to wear the various outfits and to get Leucosie to do my hair and make-up according to her sketches. What a one-of-a-kind opportunity !

Sophie, our photographer, then proceeds to 2 different photo-shoots per outfit :

One in front of a white screen, under the artistic direction of Chimère. He knows what light and what posture he needs, to later incorporate the result in his illustrations.

One in front of a red velvet screen. There Sophie is a bit more free and the idea is to use those as 19th century portraits.

Phase 7 :

Once Chimère has selected the ones he preferred, Sophie post-prods the pictures.

Phase 8 : TADA !!!!

Chimère finalizes his illustrations (in this one, the umbrella needs to change). Our long delays, enables him to make other unplanned illustrations (to present the chapters, or to illustrate the middle of a paragraph etc.).

Phase 9 :

I can finish my writing, enriched with everyones's previous ideas.

Étape 10 :

Chimère designs the chapter format with all these element (as were big meanies, we'll show you that another time ;) )

Étape 11:

As we don't have all the pictures yet, we haven't been trough this last phase. That's when we can use the final products to send the book to publishers and at last but not least to our dear kissbankers, create postcards and other cool goodies. Don't worry those will come !

We would have loved to show you all this from the beginning. Nonetheless, as we are all five of us crazy artsy people, with a thousand ideas per minute, this process isn't as tidy as shown above, and most times we work on different phases for different chapters at the same moment, which is very messy. For most chapters, we are still stuck at step 5 so we still have a LOT of work ahead of us.

Don't hesitate if you have any questions.

Let's start with the good news first, we received Clara's second parcel a few days ago. We now have 7 complete outfits out of 10 !! It's always such a privilege to receive something from Japan, yet there is a special kind of excitement when one opens a Clara Maeda's parcel. From the effort put into the packaging, to the neat and delicate writing of the address, to the sweet pink tissue paper protecting her creations. And then, you get to discover the costumes in the flesh, em I mean in the fabric. Even after seeing them in pictures (yes ,we do plan on showing them to you eventually ! ), the sight is quite impressive. The flawless craftsmanship, the cutting precision and the finishing touches are juste astonishing. Each step of this project, makes me thankful to work with artists as talented as Clara !

Let's switch to the less enjoyable piece of news. A member of our team has serious health problems, so we are now forced to postpone the 2nd photoshoot (planned for this weekend). Usually, we don't share the personal reasons for our delays. Yet, this time we had specified the date in a previous newsletter, and this was to be a pretty big step for us. We asked ourselves, if we should replace the person on the photoshoot set. Yet even if we're geographically challenged, we are a really cohesive team and we care about respecting each other's life rhythms. Whether our problems come from bad health, bad finances, or family issues, each of us has at some point in the timeline had a hard time. It comes with long project territories. But we started together and think that going on with one member short would be too tough on us. So this replacement question was unjustified. What is curious, is that this same question comes a few times in the novel. Here is not the time or place to unleash spoilers on anyone, but let's say that one learns a lot from one's characters. This is why we decided to prolong the waiting and delay this photoshoot. It will be rescheduled in 1 or 2 months. But you can count on us to keep you updated, we now start to have quite a lot of content to keep us and you busy.

Lucie Béluga and the Lady Marmelade team.

After our first shooting, Leucosie wanted to disclose her inspirations and the way she works in order to bring Charlotte's character to life.

"I had written a little about that during the Paris 1900 newsletter, but I wanted to focus a little more on the second step of my assignment.

Creative process :

When my intensive research phase is over, I then have to select, file and organize all the data I found in the various exhibitions and movies I have seen...

My task for the Lady Marmelade project is a little different than what I usually have to do. Indeed, until now, everytime I had to create make-ups or hairdos was for costume makers campaigns or stylists. I had to conceive one only look for one model, for a unique photoshoot in quite a short time of reflexion.

For our project, the challenge is to create ten different styles while keeping a given cohesion between them, and harmonize them with Clara's costumes while respecting Chimère's universe.

To do so, I documented myself both on traditional costumes from the 19th century in the various countries visited by Charlotte, inspiring myself from paintings and fashion engravings... I also watched a lot of modern movies just to get a global vision of what remains in the collective psyche about those times. Once I've accumulated enough data and feel a little more enlightened about my artistic direction, I start to file the various data in big moodboards, pinning and gluing, the most inspiring images. For Lady Marmelade, we therefore have 10 moodboards, one for each country where the action is set.

" It is the country the story starts in. It also represents the first rebellious move from the well-raised Charlotte, away from the parental authority.

To translate those wealthy families atmosphere, I found a lot of influences in the BBC adaptations of Jane Austen, drawing from her heroins. I also looked into Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as John Everett Millais, Lawrence Alma-Tadema or John William Waterhouse...

At last but not least, I documented myself about 19th century hairdos in old fashion leaflets that can be found on the Internet. I was going for a bun but I wanted it to reflect the British etiquette our main character is subjected to."

Soon we'll disclose a second moodboard ! We hope you enjoyed this one !

Summer has been long and fruitful for our team and since we all work on various projects, it went by very fast. Thus a new lack of newsletters and delays in the incentive process. Luckily, Leucosie has been the best ally and has documented our first shooting in July perfectly. Since we just set the date of the second shooting in November (planning is so difficult and the studio is in Normandy), here is Leucosie's account :

" The day started very early in order to pick the rest of the team and drive all the way to Normandy. Once there and since we had little time, the team split into smaller groups, one half prepping the "studio" and me transforming Lucie into Charlotte Marmelade. We had so many things to do that we didn't even had the time to take a real lunch together to try Lucie's delicious vegan dishes, we took turns in the kitchen.

As a well-to-do family daughter, fresh and naive, she displays an outfit full of ruffles in tones of powder pink and cream, which reflect her youth and the influence of her social background on her upbringing. Very much inspired by the Lolita style, this outfit will please Clara's fans with its classical shape and the finesse of it small details (the puff sleeves pleats, the delicate bows...).

They all have their own universe and it seems almost barbaric to just shove them all in your face at once. Would you be interested (just for the 10 sketches) to receive more than one newsletter per week or would than be too much ? In other news, Chimere is working on a nice little website for the project, for those who do not enjoy social medias.

Anyway catch the next newsletter for more news about Lady Marmelade. Because writing also means living and living is to keep holding on even in the difficult moments of life, I had to momentarily step back from the social medias. However, let it be known that the Marmelade project is in no way on pause or that the team is just basking in the sun enjoying your pledges. :) We're far far from that ! I thought about sending three smaller theme-centered messages but since I wouldn't want to frustrate anyone any longer, here's everything you need to know so that you can pick any information you'd need.

But the good thing, is that it is going very well. We are also trying to assemble documents in order to create a future exhibition portfolio that visitors will be able to order online. I also started to write the little "how to get published" since before shopping a manuscript around, one needs to know how to write a manuscript. Indeed, it seemed useful to give you a few tips to get started and not give up on your future book. As I will explain in the preface, I am of course far from being an expert ! Yet I've tried to get published for a while and succeeded in that accumulating many mistakes. This guide will list them to make you save time. The idea behind those guides is to provide comfort and motivational guidance for your own projects.

We took measurements and did our first fittings through skype since Clare lives in Japan. It was fun in a way to tell that we had a meeting with the other side of the planet at one in the morning. Internet makes time difference very easy ! The working corset was incredibly comfortable ! I can't even begin to imagine how the final pieces will be wonderful. For the next fittings, we have been lucky enough to catch our costume maker during a flash trip to France. Again the pieces point toward final masterpieces.

A very happy day folding samossas (creole dish) and teaching them an Indian recipe. Every one participated and I believe my "students" where quite happy with this experience. It made me want to go back to cooking a little and I hope that I will be able to tell you more about that in the future.

We want to produce a perfect labor and not a sloppy project which implies everyone takes his or her time. We are particularly happy of the freedom you all offered to us through this campaign and we WILL make sure that the results hold up to your expectation and patience. We will now send you a weekly newsletter so keep an eye open for us

PS : If anyone out there had a Mac Adobe suite to lend to me, we could get back to a more Lady Marmelade like layout for our Gazettes ! (Don't worry we'll get there soon).

Tomorrow at 4pm30 (Paris time) we will end 43 days of an epic funding.

We laughed, we cried, we discovered some truly amazing people, ready to help us, no matter how. Thanks to you, we almost reached our second goal that was to collect enough to print our paintings. We collected 400 euros in a week out of the 620 we need even though you had already given us everything.

During this last day, don't hesitate to share the page link again, not to ask you friends to participate, but by pride, because this project, is now your project.

So congratulations to all and to all a thank you as long and mythical as the journey ahead of Lady Marmelade.

ps : we'll soon be back with the incentive planning.

I will never thank you enough for your devotion, not only did we reach our initial goal, but we also collected enough money to pay for kisskissbankbank fees. Now, you can still help us. A lot of people still haven't participated and we still have a lot of incentives left.

At this moment, the next money we're going to collect is for our artist Chimère so that we can print his awesome illustrations; Ideally, we would need about 620 € (Or else, we will have to compromise and choose smaller sizes of print)

Would enyone be interested in pre-buying a print as an incentive?

*255 € to print 10 illustrations sized 60x20 cm (24 euros a print +5% for kkbb )

Have a nice day

And as just for our honorables donators, here is another piece of the exhibition. It will be modified but I can't resist and share it with you anyway.

Thank you

For this participation to our little card castle.

For following us, eyes wide shut, when honnestly we sometimes didn't know where we would even go.

For supporting a relentless spam on each network we were.

For bearing when everything would get on my nerves, when my schedule would change at the last minute, my bitten nails, and my vegan food litanies.

For not taking personnaly those same nerves when I would become slighty tyrannical with my requests for you to pledge here.

For broadcasting our voices beyong our family and friends circles.

For having us laugh and breath when the air was getting thinner and burnt our eyes.

For giving when you had almost nothing.

For pledging a second or a third time, commenting, liking when we needed you to.

For believing when others just ignored.

Thanks to you, this is the beginning of an amazing adventure, a journey that is not only that of our favorite ginger lady. I hope that this story, this exhibition may even change a few lives.

I will never be able to thank you enough, but whoever you are, if you read this, please know that I love you, as I most rarely say it.
