ABOUT THE PROJECT

The first editorial project for Desistfilm: Marc Hurtado De cœur à cœur ( working title) will cover the whole artistic career of Marc Hurtado, filmmaker, musician, painter, artiste total, on an art book with over 25 essays, letters, poems, forewords on all the spectrum of his art, written by different artists/critics/poets/musicians around the globe.

« Throughout my career as a filmmaker and musician, I have always strived to combine image and sound like a sculptor who mixes earth and water: these two distinct elements must form a third living matter which is the body of the film. My research is really done in the sense of an incarnation: it is the poetry that takes shape through the treatment of the image and its vital relationship to sound. It is through this alchemical and magical way that I aim to bring an interior, spiritual and cosmic experience to live in my films. » Marc Hurtado

Marc Hurtado was born in 1962 in Rabat, Morocco. Key figure of the French experimental music scene, co-founder of the duo Etant Donnés with his brother Éric in 1977, since then he has followed a polymorphous career as a musician, performer, producer, poet, visual artist and filmmaker. He has directed 26 films including 3 feature films, 55 albums and more than 500 concerts at the Kitchen in New York, Matress Factory in Pittsburgh, Fondation Cartier in Paris, Center Beaubourg in Paris, Collège des Bernardins in Paris , Gaité Lyrique in Paris, Machine du Moulin Rouge in Paris, Sonar Festival in Barcelona, Festival Ideal in Nantes, Etrange Musique in Paris, Atonal Festival in Berlin, Eurokaz in Zagreb, Biennale de Lyon, Plan K in Bruxelles, Rush Festival in Rouen, Sonic Protest in Paris, the Transmusicales in Rennes, Distrital Festival in Mexico and the Opera of Berlin.

He has collaborated with Alan Vega, Martin Rev, Lydia Lunch, Genesis P-Orridge, Michael Gira, Gabi Delgado, Z'EV, Mark Cunningham, Philippe Grandrieux, Saba Komossa, Bachir Attar and The Master Musicians of Jajouka, Michel Amato (The Hacker), Pascal Comelade , Pierre-Luc Vaillancourt, Mathieu Dufois, Jessica Hausner, Vomir , HIV+ and the singer Christophe.

Screenings of his films have been made in numerous festivals, gallerys and museums such as the FID in Marseille, Locarno Festival, Festival Entrevues in Belfort, Etrange Festival in Paris, Fifigrot in Toulouse, Cinémed in Montpellier, LUFF Festival in Lausanne, Festival Doc in Buenos Aires, Fronteira Festival de Goiânia in Brazil, South London Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery in London, Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Museum of Contemporary Art in Buenos Aires, Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lyon, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Newcastle, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico, Distrital Festival in Mexico, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam or the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

He has produced original film soundtracks for Philippe Grandrieux, Jessica Hausner, Pierre-Luc Vaillancourt, Mathieu Dufois and Philippe Roche.

Retrospectives of his films have been organized at La Cinémathèque Française (Paris), Cinéma du Réel Festival (Paris), BAFICI Festival (Buenos Aires), Alta Fidelidad Festival (Bogota), Festival Film Mutations (Zagreb), Microscope Gallery (Brooklyn) and Luff Festival (Lausanne).

His films have been acquired by the Centre Beaubourg, Institut d'Art Moderne de Villeurbanne, the Magasin / Cnac in Grenoble, the Anthology Film Archives in New York and the feature film “Jajouka, something good is coming to you” ( co-produced with his brother Eric) by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

His paintings and installations have been exhibited at the Galerie du Jour in Paris, Confort Moderne in Poitiers, Galerie Linette in Montpellier, Galerie Laurent Godin in Paris, Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in New York, Empty Gallery in Hong Kong and CAN in Neuchâtel.

ABOUT DESISTFILM

Desistfilm was born in Peru, in 2012. It was born out of a vacuum, seeking to counteract our weariness towards a local film criticism with a shared agenda and linked to the commercial billboard. A vacuum that eight years later continues to grow, despite the emergence of the democratization of information via Internet, which has allowed the most independent, experimental, risky, political cinema to become visible and accessible outside the feud of a few.

Our bet is with the cinema that shelters us and makes us part of a better world.
