PAPJAZZ FESTIVAL HAITI 2020, 14th EDITION

WHAT'S THE PAPJAZZ?

It’s the Port-au-Prince International Jazz Festival, a real breath of OXYGEN, that the whole town desperately needs every January.

A remarkable 8-days long nonprofit music event - 85% free- that caters to the most diverse crowd and features, since 2007, amazing artists from Haiti and all over the world.

Having been in operation for 13 years in a rather challenging context, the PAPJAZZ is a relatively sustainable event that has public, private and international cooperation partners. Today the very difficult economic context makes it even more challenging than ever to host it.

WHAT'S OUR STORY?

It’s a story of passion for what we do. It’s a story of the love we have for our country and its people. And most of all, a common love for jazz music in all of its forms and diversity. It all started when Joel Widmaier, a local Haitian musician and two friends of his -one French, one Mexican- dared each other to pursue this crazy idea of hosting the First ever made International Jazz Festival in Port-au-Prince, capital of HAITI, the first Black republic in the World. An event that would offer high quality music and experience to all… and that crazy dream came true! Since 2007, the PAPJAZZ FESTIVAL remains free at 85%. Letting anyone and everyone enjoy the beauty of jazz music from all over the World and showcasing the great Haitian music in all its diversity and richness.

LET US TELL YOU WHO WE ARE

Today and since 2008, Joel Widmaier, Milena Sandler-Widmaier (life partners and volunteers of the PAPJAZZ) joined a few years later by Coralie Gardère, are the ones that make this tour-de-force happen year after year, as they host the FESTIVAL, that takes place in mid-January, which by the way is a great way to start the year! This is done through a nonprofit Haitian institution, the Haiti Jazz Foundation, check it out, and see ALL that we do.

THE PAPJAZZ TEAM

Apart from the 3 musketeers of the Haiti Jazz Foundation, an amazing & passionate mix of loyal volunteers and freelancers come together every year to make this miracle happen and are joined by new young members at each new edition.

THANKS TO YOU, THE FUNDS COLLECTED WILL BE USED FINANCE THE ESSENTIAL ITEMS RELATED TO THE FREE ACTIVITIES.

Although we absolutely and definitely need to secure the full amount of 40,000$ in order to balance le budget and ensure that the festival has a 14th edition in January 2020 and remains mainly free, we chose to do this step by step – each one representing a free access music scene.

PHASE 1 - $10,000

This amount will help us continue to offer 15 free

WORKSHOPS & MASTERCLASSES

every day during the PAPJAZZ

Why offer workshop? Because we believe that it’s mostly through KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER that the young promising Haitian musicians are learning and are acquiring their skills, we offer, during the festival, 15 FREE WORKSHOPS hosted by the performing guest artists. Being exposed to jazz stars has instilled, in the young jazz musicians’ heart, the desire to surpass themselves. Today we can pride ourselves in having participated in the creation of the new generation of talented jazz musicians in Haiti, and we need to continue offering those didactic activities next January.

If we are successful with phase 1 THANKS TO YOU, we will be able to get to the next one...

PHASE 2 - $14,000

This amount will help us continue to offer free access

“AFTER-HOURS”

What are the After-hours/jam sessions? They are music events that take place every evening, during the Jazz days, simultaneously to the concerts that happen on the main venues.

Joss Stone (UK) jamming with Haitian musicians

These music happenings are “win-win” events, and let us tell you why!

They represent a wonderful opportunity for emerging local artists to get recognized as they perform live in from of a public of aficionados present at the After-hours and to stand a chance to play with international jazz stars, in “impromptu jam sessions”. They are an economical boost for the hospitality industry, as the restaurants or hotels that host those After-hours benefit greatly from them, and a moment of appreciation as the tourists and the international artists get to enjoy a taste of Haiti. These unique moments for everyone and anyone need to keep existing as they are an amazing way to bring people together.

PHASE 3 - $16,000

This amount will help us continue to offer free access concerts on THE MAIN STAGES

Who attends those concerts? EVERYONE!

The free access concerts are the most popular ones; the ambiance feels like a bubble of freedom & joy shared by everyone.

The crowd, close to 12,000 people over the festival, is an incredible mix of students, local residents, street kids, music lovers, workers, unemployed, expatriates, street vendors, diplomats and tourists. The young ones are eager to discover new sounds, and learn about new cultures thought jazz music interpreted by renown bands from all over the World, as more than ever, today jazz is all about fusion…

The concerts series usually ends with a very popular Haitian artist and in between the sets, a “rara band” makes the whole crowd dance. Moreover, the concerts have an extremely positive impact on the street vendors' sales.
