Dear Contributors,  <div class="im" style="color: rgb(80, 0, 80);"> It's been a while, hasn't it. If you're asking yourselves whether we ended up using your hard-earned money on the crazy Berlin nightlife, or a couple all-inclusive trips to the Bahamas, this email should serve to reassure you. We're happy to say we've been hard at work on our documentary and very productive. Here's an update. First off, you should know that we decided to change the topic of our movie a little bit. While starting to work on this project early this summer, we realized the extent to which a documentary takes time to shoot and produce (in our defence, it's our first and we're learning as we progress). Though the subject chosen is indeed interesting, the adventure we would have thrown ourselves into was perhaps a little too ambitious. We therefore decided to start by focusing our energy on one of the sites in Berlin: the old Tempelhof airport. We'll consider visiting a second site once we finish the first.  We chose to make a movie uniquely about this old airport thanks to current day events unfolding in Berlin. In fact, this vast open space (bigger than Central Park in New York) is at the heart of a battle between the City of Berlin and a number of its residents. The city wants to renew the space with a small pond, green spaces, benches, etc.) and build condos on the periphery of the field, as well as a municipal library. On the other hand, advocacy groups and residents are mobilizing to keep the old airport field as it was since the public opening of the space in 2010. The themes we would like to develop around this topic include the site's particularity and its historical significance, the notion of “rights to the city,” as well as fear of the empty and utopia.  Secondly, we're equally happy to say that our finances for this project are going very well. With roughly 20 interviews done and 10 hours of footage, we've spent less than a quarter of our budget. We still have quite a bit of work indeed, but we wanted to say that we're confidently on track.  Third, we want to inform you that we unfortunately lost the competition, "Première Caméra," the competition for which we initially requested funds.  We were a little miffed, especially after we discovered one of the winners was an experienced filmmaker that had already a number of documentaries under her belt (let's remember, the competition targeted novice filmmakers and offered them professional support throughout the development of the film, from scriptwriting, to broadcasting and distribution). Nevertheless, we ended being one of the 20 shortlisted proposals. Wanting to see this project to its completion, we still intend to find a distributor for our movie. Therefore, on the agenda for the next few months: more shooting and interviews, but also meetings with TV chains that would be interested in our topic. Fourth and final, we want to apologize for having taken so long to write you. Our New Years resolution for 2014 is to keep you updated on our progress more often! Also, you can be assured that we haven’t forgotten your compensations, but they’ll arrive more towards the end of the shooting, around the end of spring. Si vous vous demandiez si nous n'avions pas fini par dépenser vos précieuses contributions dans de folles soirées ou dans un voyage aux Bahamas, ce mail devrait vous rassurer. Nous sommes heureux de vous annoncer que nous avons été productifs et que nous continuons à travailler sur notre projet de documentaire. </div> Premièrement, il faut que vous sachiez que nous avons décidé de changer quelque peu l'angle de notre film. En commençant cet été à travailler sur le projet, nous avons réalisé à quel point tourner et produire un documentaire prenait du temps (pour notre défense, il s'agit de notre premier, nous apprenons en même temps que nous avançons). Le sujet que nous avions choisi était certes très intéressant, mais l’aventure dans laquelle il aurait fallu se lancer peut-être un peu trop ambitieuse. C'est pourquoi nous avons pris la décision de nous concentrer dans un premier temps sur un des sites à Berlin : l'ancien aéroport de Tempelhof. Nous pourrons ensuite nous attaquer à un second site une fois le premier film terminé. Le choix de réaliser un film uniquement sur cet ancien aéroport nous a paru évident à la lumière des événements et du débat dont il fait l’objet actuellement. En effet, cette immense étendue vide (plus grande que Central Park à New York) est l'objet d'une bataille entre la ville Berlin et une partie de ses habitants. Les instances dirigeantes de la ville veulent aménager l'espace (point d'eau, espaces verts, bancs, etc) et construire des logements tout autour du parc (ainsi qu'une bibliothèque municipale à plus long terme). Les associations d’habitants, quant à elles, se mobilisent pour que l'ancien aéroport reste tel qu'il est depuis son ouverture au public en 2010. Les thématiques que nous voulons développer sont bien sûr l'aspect particulier et historique du lieu, mais aussi les notions de droit à la ville, de peur du vide et d'utopie. Deuxièmement, nous sommes également heureux de vous faire savoir que nos finances se portent plutôt bien. Nous avons dépensé à peu près un quart du budget et réalisé une vingtaine d'interviews ainsi qu'une dizaine d'heures d'images. Il nous reste à abattre un travail considérable mais nous pensons être sur la bonne voie. Troisièmement, nous voulons vous informer que nous n'avons pas remporté le concours "Première Caméra" pour lequel nous avions initialement proposé la levée de fonds. Nous avons été déçus, surtout lorsqu'on nous avons appris que l'un des lauréats était une réalisatrice expérimentée qui avait déjà de nombreux documentaires à son actif (on le rappelle, la compétition devait cibler des réalisateurs novices, d'où le nom "Première Caméra", offrant à ceux-ci d’être encadrés par une équipe professionnelle pour les guider et les conseiller tout au long de leur projet jusqu'aux étapes finales de diffusion et distribution). Nous avons néanmoins fait partie des 20 derniers projets en lice. Voulant aller jusqu’au bout de notre projet, nous comptons bien trouver un distributeur pour notre film. Au programme de ses prochains mois donc : encore plus de tournage, d’interviews mais aussi des rendez-vous avec des chaînes susceptibles de s’intéresser au sujet! Quatrièmement, et finalement, nous voulons nous excuser d’avoir été si longs à vous donner de nos nouvelles. Notre bonne résolution de cette année 2014 sera de vous tenir au courant des avancées de notre film (à nous tous) plus régulièrement! Rassurez vous également, nous n’avons pas oublié vos contreparties, mais celles-ci arriveront plutôt vers la fin de notre tournage prévue au printemps.
